At the recent annual Parents’ Meeting of the Greece Girls Soccer League, in Greece, NY, the current Board of Directors unveiled plans to expand the recreational soccer program to include a boy’s division.
The plans for the new GGSL, which will become the Greater Greece Soccer League, will feature boy's and girls' "in-house" programs, participation for some teams in the MURSL travel program, and participation in the RDSL Women’s League. The new boy’s division will begin in the Fall of 2016. Registration begins for the fall program on June 1st 2016.
Greater Greece Soccer League President Shannon Staub explained, “The inclusion of boys to our program is one of many strategies that the Board has been developing within the organization’s newly launched long-range expansion plan. This goes along with a comprehensive foot-skills program review and the recent addition of new activities such as Friday Night Under the Lights, indoor practice sessions, and a fun Coaches Game to kick off our Annual SoccerFest at Marella Park on English Rd. We want to provide our players an opportunity to enjoy the sport but also allow our soccer family and friends to join in on the excitement.”
GGSL's Director of Youth Development Kim Lorhmann said this week that the expansion should spur renewed excitement of soccer within the Town of Greece and even in New York State.
"Our program has been around for almost 45 years. At one point this program hosted 1800 players within the Town of Greece. It's time to bring this program back to its roots and give our town something they can enjoy together throughout the seasons”, said President, Shannon Staub.
GGSL provides opportunities and support to other Greece organizations as well. The club has worked closely with Boy Scout Troop 195, who act as the primary food vendor at Friday Night Lights games, as well as SoccerFest weekend. This allows the troops to raise money.
They have also worked to collect food items to support the Greece Ecumenical Food Shelf during SoccerFest. And recently, GGSL partnered with the Town of Greece to assist with funding to focus on improving Town fields.
The Greater Greece Soccer League Board of Directors would like to thank ALL parties involved and we look forward to continuing our celebration at the Barnard parade.
GGSL would also like to recognize Coach John Tando
Tampa, FL - A retired police chief from East Rochester was honored this week. John Tando received the Citizen Appreciation Award from the police chief of Tampa. Last November, Tando helped an officer when he was injured breaking up a fight at Raymond James Stadium. Tando had been there for a Buccaneers game. He came to the officer's aid after the officer was punched and knocked down.Tando fended off the people attacking him until more police arrived. Chief Eric Ward told Tando the officer who he helped is doing fine and he was appreciative of his help.
